Leading up to this compromise there was extreme tension within the U.S Congress between pro-slavery and anti-slavery proponents. The Missouri Compromise was passed in 1820 in an attempt to uphold balance in congress between slave and free states. This compromise admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. It also prohibited slavery in the Louisiana Territory north of the 36 30 latitude line with the exception of Missouri. However, in 1854 the compromise was repealed by the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The supreme court also declared the compromise unconstitutional in the Dread Scott case, stating that the Congress did not have the right to prohibit slavery in the Louisiana Territories.
Sectionalism/Nationalism
The compromise was essentially supposed to settle a disagreement, but at the same time it promoted sectionalism. The 36 30 latitude line created a divide between the slave states and the free states, which encouraged the two factions to view each other as separate or not together as one nation. Many historians also believe the division that the Missouri Compromise promoted led to the fall of the Union. The compromise relates to nationalism as well because the compromise was passed in an attempt to make everyone happy and satisfied. Admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state was meant to keep a balance in the nation. However, that would back fire and eventually effect nationalism negatively by dividing the nation.
